David Gerardo Cabrera Rico came to the US in 2024. He is now among the men who have been expelled to CECOT.

Coming to the US

According to an interview in the newspaper La Verdad, Aura Rosa Rico, the mother of David Gerardo Cabrera Rico, said her son first lived legally in Chile for nine years. However he decided to move to the US in 2024. Once he arrived in Mexico, he “made his papers and his documents to enter legal” according to Aura Rosa Rico.  Once in the US, David applied for Temporary Protected Status.

Detained and Expelled

On July 3, 2024 David was arrested and accused of being in Tren de Aragua due to his tattoos. According to his mother, David’s only tattoos include her name, and that of his four children.  He was taken to Virginia where he was detained until March 3, 2025. David told his mother that he was being taken to Texas where he believed he would be deported to Mexico. Later he told Aura that they would be deported to Venezuela but the final flight destination was Guantanamo, Cuba.  Later he was confirmed on the list of men who had been sent to CECOT.  His mother said he has never committed a crime in Venezuela, Chili, the US, or El Salvador.
